Intermittent fault codes, parts keep failing

My transmission keeps throwing intermittent fault codes. Three shops have replaced parts and the problem always comes back. At what point do you stop replacing parts and start looking for wiring issues? Where do you start?

If multiple parts have already been replaced and the same intermittent fault keeps returning, it's time to stop replacing components and start testing the electrical system.

Intermittent problems are often the most frustrating because they don't happen all the time. In many cases, the failed part isn't the transmission at all—it's the wiring, connector, power supply, or ground that the transmission depends on.

Replacing more parts without confirming the cause usually leads to more expense and the same recurring problem.

Step One: Read the Story Behind the Code

A diagnostic trouble code doesn't tell us what part to replace.

It tells us what system the computer is unhappy with.

For example, a shift solenoid code doesn't automatically mean the solenoid has failed.

The real cause could be:

An open wire.
A short to ground.
High resistance in a connector.
Low system voltage.
A damaged transmission control module.
Moisture intrusion.
A failing power or ground circuit.

The code is the beginning of the diagnosis—not the end.

Inspect the Wiring Harness

Transmission wiring often runs in harsh environments where it's exposed to:

Heat.
Road debris.
Water.
Salt.
Vibration.
Sharp brackets.
Exhaust components.

Over time, insulation can rub through, connectors can loosen, and wires can break internally without showing any visible damage.

Check Power and Ground Circuits

Many intermittent faults aren't caused by the transmission at all.

A weak ground or unstable power supply can create:

Random transmission codes.
Erratic shifting.
Intermittent limp mode.
Communication faults.
Solenoid performance codes.

Before replacing expensive components, we verify that the electrical foundation is solid.

Perform Voltage Drop Testing

A wire can look perfect from the outside and still have excessive resistance inside.

That's why we don't rely on visual inspections alone.

We perform voltage-drop testing under load to determine whether the circuit can actually carry current—not just show continuity.

Wiggle Test the Harness

One of the most effective diagnostic techniques is also one of the simplest.

While monitoring live scan data, we gently move sections of the wiring harness and connectors.

If a sensor reading suddenly changes or communication is interrupted, we've identified an intermittent wiring problem that would never be found by replacing parts.

Compare Commanded vs. Actual Operation

We also verify whether the transmission is responding correctly.

We monitor:

Commanded gear.
Actual gear.
Solenoid commands.
Solenoid feedback (when available).
Input and output speed sensors.
Line pressure.
Network communication.
Battery voltage during operation.

This tells us whether the computer is losing communication, the wiring is failing, or the transmission itself isn't responding properly.
