Identifying a fluid leak
THE QUESTION
I noticed a small leak under my vehicle. The fluid isn't red anymore — it's kind of brown. How can a customer tell whether they're looking at transmission fluid, engine oil, transfer case fluid, or something else?

We inspect:
The exact origin of the leak.
The type and condition of the fluid.
Whether the leak is active or simply residue from an older repair.
Fluid levels in all related systems.
Any damage that may have caused the leak.
Only after identifying the source do we recommend repairs.

A brown fluid under your vehicle doesn't automatically mean it's engine oil—or transmission fluid. Many fluids darken with age, and several can look remarkably similar. Proper diagnosis identifies the leak before any unnecessary repairs are made.
