Gear hunting on the highway
2018 Chevy Silverado
THE QUESTION
On the highway it feels like the transmission can't decide what gear it wants — the RPMs move up and down without me changing speed. No warning lights. What are the most common causes of that kind of gear hunting?
MIKE'S ANSWER

Gear hunting is one of the most common transmission complaints we hear, and it doesn't always mean the transmission needs to be rebuilt. In many cases, the transmission is responding to information it's receiving from the engine or control system.

Some of the most common causes include:

Torque Converter Clutch (TCC) Cycling

The torque converter clutch should lock steadily at cruising speed. If it's repeatedly applying and releasing, you'll notice the engine RPM rise and fall without changing your speed. This is one of the most common causes of "gear hunting."

Faulty Sensor Inputs

Modern transmissions rely on dozens of sensor inputs to decide when to shift. A faulty throttle position sensor, mass airflow sensor, engine load calculation, or speed sensor can cause the transmission to constantly rethink which gear it should be in—even if no warning light is on.

Incorrect Transmission Fluid

Even if the fluid looks clean, the wrong fluid specification or deteriorated fluid can affect shift quality and torque converter operation.

Engine Performance Problems

Sometimes the transmission isn't the problem at all. An engine that's misfiring, lacking power, or providing inaccurate load information can cause unnecessary downshifts and frequent gear changes.

Software or Adaptive Shift Issues

Many newer vehicles "learn" your driving habits. Occasionally, a software update or adaptive relearn procedure can correct erratic shifting without replacing any parts.

Internal Transmission Wear

Worn valve body components, sticking valves, or excessive torque converter slip can also cause gear hunting. That's why proper testing is important before recommending repairs.
