If the transmission had forward gears before replacing the solenoid and immediately lost them afterward, don't assume the new solenoid is defective.
The first question is:
What changed during the repair?
Something was disturbed during disassembly or reassembly, and that's where the diagnosis should begin.
Double-Check the Solenoid Installation
Not every replacement solenoid is identical.
Verify:
The correct solenoid was installed.
It is fully seated in its bore.
O-rings are installed correctly.
No O-rings were cut or rolled during installation.
The retaining clip is properly engaged.
A solenoid that's slightly out of position may not direct hydraulic pressure where it's supposed to go.
Inspect the Valve Body
If the valve body was removed or loosened, check for:
Misaligned separator plates.
Gaskets installed backward.
Missing or misplaced check balls.
Incorrect bolt locations.
Uneven bolt torque.
A single misplaced check ball or gasket can eliminate an entire hydraulic circuit.
Verify Every Electrical Connector
It's surprisingly common to find:
A connector not fully latched.
Two similar connectors accidentally swapped.
Bent terminals.
Pins pushed back into the connector.
One loose connection can keep the transmission from applying the correct clutch pack.
Manual Valve Engagement
If the shift linkage or valve body was disturbed, verify that the manual valve is properly engaged with the rooster comb or shift linkage.
If the manual valve isn't positioned correctly, the shifter may indicate Drive while the valve body never actually directs fluid into the forward circuits.
This is one of the first things I check after any valve body service.
Check Fluid Level
Never overlook the basics.
Low fluid, an incorrect fill procedure, or air trapped after service can cause delayed or missing forward engagement.
Many modern transmissions require checking the level at a specific temperature and under very specific conditions.
Was Anything Else Disturbed?
During a simple solenoid replacement it's easy to accidentally disturb:
Internal harnesses.
Pressure switches.
Solenoid brackets.
Valve body gaskets.
Manual linkage.
Case connectors.
Sometimes the problem isn't the part you replaced—it's the part you accidentally moved.
