Before pulling the transmission back out, stop and ask one question:
Is the transmission physically unable to shift, or is it being commanded to stay in second gear?
There's a big difference.
Many transmissions default to second gear as a protective strategy when the control module detects a problem. That means the issue may be electrical or hydraulic—not a failed rebuild.
Scan It First
Before turning another wrench, connect a quality scan tool.
Look for:
Transmission fault codes.
Engine fault codes.
Speed sensor codes.
Solenoid circuit codes.
Communication faults.
A transmission stuck in second gear may simply be in limp mode.
Verify Input and Output Speed Sensors
The transmission computer has to know:
How fast the engine is turning.
How fast the transmission is turning.
How fast the vehicle is moving.
If one of those signals is missing, many transmissions will stay in a default gear to protect themselves.
Check Every Connector
During a rebuild it's easy to overlook:
Internal harness connectors.
External case connectors.
Ground wires.
Solenoid plugs.
Pins pushed back inside the connector.
One unplugged connector can make a perfectly rebuilt transmission appear defective.
Verify the Manual Valve
If the valve body was removed, make sure the manual valve is properly engaged with the shift linkage.
A manual valve that's one notch off can create all kinds of strange shift complaints.
It's one of the first things I verify after any valve body installation.
Confirm Fluid Level
Low fluid can cause pressure problems.
Too much fluid can aerate the oil.
Some transmissions require:
A specific temperature.
Engine running.
Cycling through every gear.
Factory fill procedure.
Checking it incorrectly can lead to misleading conclusions.
Perform a Line Pressure Test
Before removing the transmission, verify that it's producing proper hydraulic pressure.
If pressure is within specification, the problem may be:
Electrical.
Valve body related.
Solenoid related.
Sensor related.
If pressure is low, then we begin looking at pump operation, filter installation, pressure regulator function, or internal leaks.
Review What Changed
Ask yourself:
Did it shift before the rebuild?
What parts were replaced?
Was the valve body disassembled?
Were any check balls relocated?
Were separator plate gaskets installed correctly?
Was every thrust washer and sealing ring accounted for?
Many "rebuild failures" turn out to be one overlooked assembly detail.
How We Diagnose It
At MDC Automotive Repair, we don't remove a freshly rebuilt transmission simply because it won't upshift.
We first determine whether the transmission can't shift—or whether it's being prevented from shifting.
Our process includes:
Retrieving all diagnostic trouble codes.
Monitoring live shift data.
Verifying speed sensor signals.
Checking transmission line pressure.
Inspecting electrical connectors and grounds.
Confirming manual valve operation.
Reviewing the rebuild and installation procedures.
Only after eliminating external causes do we consider removing the transmission again.

A transmission stuck in second gear after a rebuild doesn't automatically mean the rebuild failed. Many times, the cause can be found and corrected without removing the transmission.
